Finding the Right Niche

If you’re new to the internet or online marketing you’ll find that most everywhere you go online you will read or hear that you must focus on a niche for your business. If you are new to Internet Marketing, this is good advice you will want to pay close attention to because it will save you a lot of grief and work.

Maybe you are one of the thousands of people that come online every day for the first time in search of wealth. Many jump right into the markets that are completely saturated and then wonder why they are not making money.  Or they might go into markets that for one reason or another there is no coherence to and people don’t have much in common and therefore they won’t make any money.

If you have unlimited time, money and patience, it is possible they might succeed in such markets, but leaves out most of us. For those that do not have unlimited supplies of these precious resources, aiming for a targeted niche market can be a much smarter way to start your online business. You will have less competition and a much easier job becoming successful compared to going after a main market.

What is a niche?

If you want a more complicated long answer, you can buy any one of the hundreds of eBooks being sold online about niche markets. You could go to a dictionary and see the definition of niche that it gives. You can read all that Wikipedia has to say about niches, but it’s not so easy to understand. But the short answer is a niche simply means a distinct segment of a larger market.

banana niche - the right niche? So, many of us want to start a business focusing on Internet or online marketing. This is how the gurus are making a lot of their money, so it must be a good way to go. That is the problem. The market is saturated with people who have years of experience in this area. A new person trying to compete in such a broad market does not have much chance of success. Even if they were very persistent it would take much longer, more work, and more money to be successful.

Checking the various definitions of Internet Marketing you’ll see these terms mentioned; the strategies that are used to market a product or service online, marketing strategies that include search engine optimization and search engine submission, copywriting that encourages site visitors to take action, web site design strategies, online promotions, reciprocal linking, and email marketing.

A new person coming online to start an online business has little chance of knowing enough about do many areas to be able to compete effectively in the large internet marketing market. So how is a new online Marketer to have any chance at success?  Only go after the narrower smaller niches within the internet marketing niche Think keyword research, thing quality content, think build a rapport with your audience – Think Niche!

From the above factors that you might find comprising internet marketing you can come up with the following niches:

  • Marketing
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Web Site Design
  • Linking
  • Copywriting
  • Promotion
  • Email Marketing

Consider a Narrow Niche within the Main Niche

Even if you are lucky and are extremely experienced already in one of the above niches, you need to be willing to explore niches within these broader areas. You may find a niche you are much better suited to plus it should have far less competition compared to the larger niche it is a part of.

You will need to do keyword research to find a niche that is viable for a beginner and doesn’t have too much heavy competition. There are at least dozens of keyword tools, some free, others cost money to use or buy. Some have trial subscriptions. Of the free ones, Google AdWords Keyword Tool is an excellent choice and gives you some valuable information on the keywords and search volumes. If you have an AdWords or possibly some other Google account, then that tool gives you even more helpful information about keywords.

childrens niche? There are also many websites that give you a lot of helpful information about niches and niche websites and blogs. Not only will you need to find a niche, apart from quality content you need to provide to your audience, you need to know how to promote your website so you will get enough traffic to make it worthwhile.

If you like the Niche – it’s easier

One other thing that I feel is important is to find a niche about something you are interested in. Personally I never thought much about this, but over the years it has become clear that the sites that are about something I am interested in are far easier to maintain and it is not like a job compared to sites I put up just to make money or because I had a domain name for a particular niche.

Success in any business comes from supplying a product that the public has a demand for and that the market has room for. Find the right niche you are comfortable with, create your website, fill it with high quality content, promote it, and you are on your way to niche profits.
